The Birmingham and District Chess League (BDCL) has been in existence for just over a hundred years, the centenary being celebrated in the 1996-97 season with a variety of events and specially designed memorabilia.
Generally the purpose of the League is to encourage the study and playing of Chess by organising team and individual championships amongst its members. Membership of the league is confined to clubs who have their club rooms no more than 12 miles from Birmingham city centre (for accuracy Stephenson Place). This means that clubs can be as far apart as Stourbridge and Tamworth, but with our Motorway system (?) all areas are within easy reach. Chess Clubs have to pay an annual fee to become members and in return they receive handbooks for each member of their team(s) and regular League bulletins, approximately 8½ in a season, with match results and up to date League positions. It is hoped that we will be able to include all this information on this site.

Every year a Committee is elected to oversee the smooth running of the league and to deal with any problems that might arise, to this end they are assisted by various subcommittees such as the rules committee and the tournament committee.

Should you wish to know how to start a Chess Club, or other information, E-mail me at lbscc@blueyonder.co.uk and I will help all I can.
