Surviving Garratt Locomotives
Angola
News has reached me that the scrppers have started on the dumped loco's in Huambo - stateing from the East and moving west - info from Edward Crowther
Not a subject I expected to be find out much about - until I received a report (25/07/2007, with photographic proof - see below) of a CFB 10D "dumped" at "Kunge", It looks as if it was hit in the cab by a rocket but, apart from being stripped of easily removable parts, is substantially complete but remains unidentified at present. There are definitely 14 in Huambo which have now been identified, youtube video and another of the dump(courtesy Jamie Grieve). I have seen a website refering to two locos "reserved for museum" but the numbers don't match the Garratt series...... The photograph of the Krupp built example was found by Scott Jesser on a Swiss website. This is near Catete on the CF Luanda with what looks like a Beyer Peacock example behind it. I managed to find Catete on GE and there is "line" of stock but the resolution was not good enough to positively identify locomotives, however I'm prepared to speculate that there might be more than two and that these were placed here for safe keeping during the troubled period of Angolan history. I am hopeful that this site may be inspected in the near future (and it has been this week commencing 07/12/2008). Andy Chalmers has provided 60+ photographs of the Catete Dump and John Middleton has spent some time identifying what is there, all the Beyer Peacock 501 class and the remaining 4 Krupp 551 class along with example of the rest of the CFL roster. Scott has been researching the Benguela railway and has found that Google Earth is a good tool, especially where high resolution pictures are available, and from this he was able to identify at least 8 Garratts at Huambo (see comments above re locos at Huambo). Scott's searching has turned up 2006 photographs of at least another 3 (possibly 5, maybe more) at Luena (also visible on Google Earth) one of which is 10B 322 (BP 6612/1930. A later discovery was BP 6611/1930, CFB 321 (confirmed by worksplate but power bogies are on Huambo dump), at Kuito (by Phil Halford). Since them another 3 have been seen at Kuito - Google earth but there is a cloud obscuring part of the area! It seems that there are more than 40 survivors especially as another 8 have now been spotted on Google Earth at Kuito (Garratts only that is - there are survivors of other types). Making it probable that Angola contains the largest number of Garratts in the world. Jamie Grieve, who is based in Huambo had an opportunity to explore the sidings south of the workshops in Huambo and there are 25 locomotives there of which 17 or 18 are Garratts including examples of classes 10A & 10E, most are not currently identified but I have added tables showing what we have been able to identify so far. The total number of steam locomotives found, so far, in Huambo is 38 which includes 24 or 25 Garratts (which blows my earlier estimate of 15 right out of the water)plus another 20 or so at Catete on the CF Luanda. Link to Jamie Grieves' photographs Most of the locomotives on the Huambo dump have had their cylinder castings damaged by explosives - info from Jamie Grieve. Scott Jessor has been scouring Google Earth and has noticed some construction work is visible. To summarise what has been found so far (with a bit of speculation thown in):
Huambo shed - Site now cleared but locomotives relocated nearer the workshops
Huambo works(including sidings/dump - At least 34 locos but very few identified so far
Luena shed - about 17 locos (from aerial photographs & TV footage) most unidentified
Kuito possibly 8 (7 at shed site) - 3 definate ids
Lobito Class 11 402 - subject to confirmation
Luau "several"
Tables below include all known survivors - not just Garratts - as this information is also of interest.

As the power bogies of 321 are in Huambo but the loco is elsewhere (identified by worksplate) this loco
has obviously had a bogie swap though without inspecting the loco itself we can't tell which loco was the "donor". I've just been informed that the
CFB held a spare set of 10B frames "in stock" hence 321 (complete) could be elsewhere
All known CF Luanda survivors
Today (11/10/2010) cutting has commenced at Catete and by 05/05/2011 only four remained
The cutting was organised by the CFL but apparently a Museum is planned at Muceques (Luanda) with the remaining locos are intended for display.

CF Mocamedes
I have been told that there are steam locomotives present in Lubango (Sa da Bandiera) but exactly what is currently unknown and possibly some more near Cuchi to the west of Menonge - photographic evidence still awaited, report via aid workers.
Unidentified CFB class 10D at Kunge (Kuito) - site now cleared for rebuilding of the CF Benguela (Jamie Grieve)
CFA Krupp Garratt unidentified (Krupp /1954) all known surviving members of this class are at Catete ,(there are also the entire Beyer Peacock 500 class present)
Photograph Philippe Dahinden. Catete dump did contain 10 garratts but cutting up has just commenced - exact details awaited, 3 Jung 251 class 2-8-2's and several 150 HL class 4-8-0's.
Picture from the RSR-CH website
Two CFA 501 class and a Krupp 551 at Catete Dump - Andy Chalmers visited the site on 07/12/08 and photographed everything there (Andy Chalmers)
now everything has been recorded before the scrappers arrive - now to find someone who's visited Sa da Bandiera

South African Railways GMAM. This locomotive has the boiler frame of BP 7681/1956 and the wheel sets of BP 7754/1956, and is being restored as BP 7754/1956, however the boiler unit of BP 7754/1956, mounted on the wheel sets of another loco, is preserved in South Africa by the Sandstone Steam Railway, so I've recorded it as BP 7681/1956. Newly arrived Rhodesia Railways 14A - 509 (BP 7582/1953). I'm not sure where this was stored prior to shipment but it arrived, via Melbourne, just after christmas 2007.
