Beer of the month...................October
I don't normally like beers with jokey names. I
always figure that the brewers aren't taking their product seriously enough! However, as I
was feeling in a frivolous mood, I picked this up on my tasting run. I was very pleasantly
surprised.

The label rattled on about a "subtle hoppy
flavour", but this was a very bitter beer - about as bitter as Bass, which is fairly
bitter. I liked the bitterness, which contrasted well with a very rounded maltiness. This
is a fairly light beer - 4.1%ABV - and made a great early autumn brew with some earthy
aftertaste and a deep finish. A very attractive beer, too, with a nice cohesive head and a
dark golden colour.
As for the name, far from being a term used for a
bit of nooky, it refers to Fell-running, which is a series of races over the Yorkshire
Moors held every New Year's Eve. Apparently, one old boy won three races running sometime
in the 1920s. The prize? Why, a bottle of beer, of course!
