Beer of the month............May

This month's beer is an Irish ale which proved to be a very pleasant drink on a hot day at the tail end of April. It only just crept in as a contender because of the change in the weather, but it's proved to be worthy of this month's title.

I have to say that I don't normally like Irish ales such as Cafferty's, for example. I find them a little over-sweet and a bit bland, but I was pleasantly surprised by this example. Weighing in at a respectable 4.8% ABV, this was a very smooth but full-flavoured brew and, slightly chilled, proved to be most refreshing in the warm spring weather we've been experiencing at the time of tasting.

It wasn't a particularly attractive beer - the head was very shortlived and it was an unremarkable golden-brown colour. However, viewed as an alternative to a cold lager, I can see myself having a few more of these in the warm weather I hope we'll be getting this summer. Interesting to see that it came in a "metric pint" bottle - 550 ml. As for the brewers, all it says on the label is "brewed in Ireland for C.B.C.L. Middlesex", which is a little uninformative. I got this beer in Safeways if you fancy a taste yourself.
