GONDWANA GIS
updated: 17th April 2003
A Geologic Information System for the entire Gondwana supercontinent
The Gondwana Metal-Potential GIS is a global 1:10,000,000-scale geological and metallogenic synthesis of the Gondwana supercontinent reconstructed at 150 Ma. Built around the present position of Africa, it incorporates Madagascar, India, South America, Antarctica, Australia and the Arabian Peninsula.
The system has been developed using ArcView® GIS (ESRI™) and also SynArc®, a BRGM extension for combining data with ArcView® (Braux, 1997). It is available as a stand-alone Georama version CD-ROM under GeoKiosk® from ESRI™, which is a read only version in which the data can be consulted in preset scenarios. It is nevertheless a powerful tool, both for research or for display, that offers parameter-defined display options with the ability of zooming from a scale of 1:90,000,000 to 1:1,000,000. The screen-displayed data, whether text or image, can be printed and/or copied to an image editor or word processor.
The GIS comprises three basic layers —Lithology, Faults and Mineral Resources— developed originally by the Centre for Interactive Graphical Computing of Earth Systems (CIGCES) at the University of Cape Town, and since been completed and updated by the joint BRGM-CIGCES project. The basic data layers can be broken down into several types of thematic layer such as Geographic, Chronologic, Gold potential, etc., that are presented in Georama as thematic maps.
