The Geological Information System for the ANDES
'Georama' Version for PC
Georama V. 2 – May 2001
GIS Andes is a homogeneous information system for the entire Andean Cordillera, covering an area of almost 4 million km2 and extending over some 8500 km from northern Venezuela to southern Argentina. Conceived as a tool for both the mining and academic sectors, GIS Andes is based on original syntheses and compilations.
The Georama version 2 includes geographical, geological, metallogenic, geophysical layers and metadata (information on existing data, such as existing map coverage):
Geography layer (DCW® geographic base),
DEM (30" [continental] & 2' [oceanic] raster images),
Photosatellite Imagery (Spot 4 Vegetation® 8 x 8 km and 1 x 1 km raster images with structural interpretation),
Simplified Geology (including morpho-structural domains and large fault kinematics) and Detailed Geology at 1:2,000,000 scale,
Adakitic Magmatism,
Volcanic (data on Holocene volcanism),
Geothermal Resources,
Mineral Deposits (3,300 records, plus coal deposits),
Mining Districts and Provinces (location, main features of the main ore deposits and information on Mining Companies, potential).
Heat Flow (oceanic and continental data),
Seismic (more than 50,000 seismic records),
Gravimetric Data (Bouguer anomaly calculation; isostatic correction and corresponding residual anomalies; vertical gradient calculation and structural analysis) and Gravity modelling of the Nazca plate,
Geological Coverage (more than 1,100 georeferenced maps).
In Georama version 2, these data are organized in ten preset scenarios:
1 Geography
2 Geology
3 Mineral deposits with simplified geology
4 Mineral deposits with detailed geology
5 Mining districts
6 Satellite imagery
7 Seismicity, volcanism, … and geothermal resources
8 Isostasy and regional gravity structures
9 Topo-isostatic anomalies and local gravity structures
10 Geological map coverage
