DIGITAL DATASET

updated: 08 November 1999

Compilation at 1:500,000 in ArcView, World Geobase, Autocad Map DWG with Topology, Microstation DGN or Autocad R14(R13) DWG formats, based upon a Lat/Long grid covering an area of 25-31° E and 10-15° S.

The data set is derived from various sources including local government mapping, Russian and Belgian Mapping for surface geology and point data for Mines, Deposits and Occurrences recorded in 1957 when Zaire was closed to foreign companies.

The topology created for polygon and point data is guaranteed to be clean with no duplicates and attributes to all entities. The data is supplied in the standard geographic co-ordinate system with the following conventions: Units: Decimal degrees; Standard origin: Intersection of Greenwich prime meridian with equator; Quadrants: Standard form of North East being positive, positive.

In addition to the geology and point data, the 1:1,000,000 Digital Chart of the World is being utilised to compile the background infrastructure. This is adjusted to conform with the larger scale data.

The geology is divided between Shaba/Katanga (Zaire) and Copperbelt (Zambia) where there is no defined correlation and will include a Stratigraphy for reference.

The attribute data is limited to geologic type for the polygons and Metal and Type for the point data. However, if you have any specific requirements it might well be possible to customise to meet these requirements. Please contact us to discuss this so that we can give an idea of feasibility and additional cost.

The author is a GIS consultant with many years experience working for major companies in the resources industry.

The price is AFSGLM001D - GBP500. The dataset will be supplied on CD-R. All orders must be paid in advance.

To order, please contact GeoPubs at the above address.

(N.B. We are aware that Zaire has been renamed Democratic Republic of the Congo. However, for clarity’s sake we are retaining the name Zaire for the time being. We apologise if this causes any offence.)
