When top Bristol DJ, James Small, plays Loose Threads by mu-kau, at the legendary Blue Mountain club in Bristol, the crowd clamour for more, like new born calves suckling for fresh milk.
mu-kau are Stuart Lane, Sebastian Barfield, and Clare Finglass. The band, who have been together since 1998, and "eat their cereal" in different corners of the British Isles. Stuart in Birmingham, Sebastian in Bristol, and Clare in Dublin. Band rehearsals can be a bit of a problem, but they get round this by composing much of their music over the internet, and via e-mail.
Sebastian's family come from Motown itself- Detroit, Michigan, which accounts for the strong soul tip in the mu-kau sound. Although born in England, Clare developed her unique vocal style by singing Irish ballads that have passed down through the Finglass family for generations. Stuart's girlfriend bought the computer.
The band's first single, Loose Threads, was released in April 2000, and received a universally excellent response. A new single, Ladyboy Pt. 2, and album follow in 2001.
